The Grassroots Business Fund (GBF) is a global impact investing organization supporting High Impact Businesses that provide sustainable economic opportunities for people at the base of the economic pyramid. GBF’s hybrid approach blends investment capital and capacity building to High Impact Businesses, which empower the poor as independent entrepreneurs and consumers of affordable goods and services.

Investment Officer (Jakarta, Indonesia)

Terms of Reference
II. Terms of Position
GBF is currently seeking an Investment Officer to be based permanently in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Investment Officer will work with his/her colleagues in the region to identify pipeline opportunities, develop and supervise investment and business advisory services (“BAS”) transactions, and contribute to partnership development, among other responsibilities. In addition the Investment Officer will be part of GBF’s global investment team and join GBF’s weekly pipeline committee meeting.
The main responsibilities of the Investment Officer will include the following:
  • Develop a strong pipeline of new quality investment opportunities in the region;
  • Lead the due diligence process including but not limited to: engaging with the prospective clients, structuring and closing investments, building the financial models; and preparing the legal agreements, investment memoranda, and other investment process documents;
  • Lead and manage the relationships with existing clients, including but not limited to supervisory calls and meetings, collecting and analyzing financial, operational, and social metrics reports provided by clients, and following up to ensure client payments;
  • Develop BAS (Business Advisory Services) for clients, monitoring their implementation, and evaluating results;
  • Prepare client management documents for internal reviews;
  • Manage relationships with regional and local partner organizations and contribute significantly to partnership building, including: Business Advisory Services providers, pipeline generators, co-investors, local legal counsel, and administrative support;
  • Contribute to organization-wide initiatives, including disseminating lessons learned and best practices across GBF and contributing to mentoring junior staff;
  • Contribute to the region’s strategic plan and the achievement of its objectives;
  • Other ad hoc responsibilities as needed.
III. Candidate Qualifications
Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to supporting businesses that provide sustainable economic opportunities to millions of people living at the base of the pyramid. The candidate therefore should have a demonstrated track record in working in the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) space in developing countries with previous investing and/or consulting experience. Specifically, the candidate should hold these qualifications:
  • A Indonesian national preferred, although others a valid work authorization will be considered;
  • Full professional proficiency (spoken and written) in English required and business-level command of Indonesian;
  • Advanced Degree (MBA or masters in related field) and 1-3 years of investment experience, or related bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of investment work;
  • Demonstrated ability in leading investment & business advisory service activities;
  • Relevant industry & emerging market knowledge/experience is a plus;
  • Strong track record in successful client management, including interacting directly & independently with the senior management of potential clients and other stakeholders;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds; great team player;
  • Ability to act independently and execute sound judgment;
  • Strong financial, accounting, and excel (financial modeling) skills;
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment;
  • Good understanding of and passion for the field of social enterprise and impact investing.
III. Estimated Timetable and Terms
The candidate for this position should be available to start as soon as possible. This position is a full-time position with GBF, pending successful performance in the first 6 month period.

Jakarta, Indonesia, with frequent travel within Indonesia and occasional international travel
